Driver Instructor Training

Here at Progress we adhere to the 'National Standard for Driver and Rider Training'.

Our training is of the highest quality, with our trainers constantly updating their coaching methods by attending courses such as Train the Trainer and completing the B-TEC Level 4 Professional Award in Coaching for Driver Development.

Pass The Exam

To legally operate as a driving instructor in the UK you are required to pass the DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualifying examination and hence the reason for the above course. The DVSA are the Government body who regulate driving instructors in the UK. But don’t worry if you are not academically minded the exams are very practically based.

Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor

Being an approved driving instructor (ADI) can be a very rewarding career: you’ll help people to learn an important skill for life.

The job involves working with all sorts of people so you’ll need good people skills as well as patience and understanding, a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of driving, an ability to teach, awareness of changes in the regulations for driving tests, as well as driving instruction and a sense in business.

Fit Lessons Around School

Learner drivers often want to fit in their lessons around school and work so you may have to work unsociable hours to fit in with their needs.

Skills and Knowledge Needed

  • Knowledge of teaching and the ability to design courses
  • Customer service skills
  • The ability to come up with new ways of doing things
  • Leadership skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work on your own
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • To be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • Being able to use a computer terminal or hand-held device may be beneficial for this job

Restrictions and Requirements

You'll need to:

  • Pass motoring conviction checks
  • Pass enhanced background checks
  • Be able to read a licence plate at 90 feet (27.5m) (wearing glasses or contact lenses is allowed)
  • Have a full UK or EU driving licence, held for at least 3 years
  • Be over 21 years of age

Your Day-To-Day Tasks

Your day-to-day duties may include:

  • Checking each learner's driving knowledge and ability
  • Planning a series of lessons to get learners ready for their driving test
  • Teaching about road safety, driving laws and the Highway Code
  • Giving instruction on the use of vehicle controls, steering, turning, reversing and parking safely
  • Demonstrating how to deal with emergency situations
  • Discussing basic vehicle checks
  • Keeping records of appointments and payments
  • Managing your business
