Becoming An Approved Driving Instructor

Being an approved driving instructor (ADI) can be a very rewarding career: you’ll help people to learn an important skill for life.

At Progress Driver Training we can provide all the training, help and understanding that is needed for you to pass these tests. Unlike some other training schools where they ask for full payment in advance, sometimes as much as £4000 we take payment on a pay as you go basis. All training will be carried out in one of our tuition vehicles

Progress Driver and Instructor Training

The job involves working with all sorts of people so you’ll need good people skills as well as:

  • Patience and understanding
  • A thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of driving
  • An ability to teach
  • Awareness of changes in the regulations for driving tests, as well as driving instruction
  • Business sense.

Learner drivers often want to fit in their lessons around school and work so you may have to work unsociable hours to fit in with their needs.

Skills and Knowledge

You'll need:

  • Knowledge of teaching and the ability to design courses

  • Customer service skills
  • The ability to work on your own
  • Leadership skills
  • To be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • The ability to come up with new ways of doing things
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Being able to use a computer terminal or hand-held device may be beneficial for this job

Restrictions and Requirements

You'll need to:

  • Pass motoring conviction checks
  • Pass enhanced background checks
  • Be able to read a licence plate at 90 feet (27.5m) (wearing glasses or contact lenses is allowed)
  • Have a full UK or EU driving licence, held for at least 3 years
  • Be over 21 years of age

To become an approved driving instructor you will need to have held a full UK or EU driving license for four out of the last six years, no convictions in the last ten years, have less than six points on your license, have an enhanced CRB check and be able to read a number plate from a distance of 27.5 metres. To qualify you must pass three stringent tests. The first test is a theory test, second part is an advanced driving test and the third part is a test on your intructional ability.

Your day-to-day duties may include:

  • checking each learner's driving knowledge and ability
  • planning a series of lessons to get learners ready for their driving test
  • teaching about road safety, driving laws and the Highway Code
  • giving instruction on the use of vehicle controls, steering, turning, reversing and parking safely
  • demonstrating how to deal with emergency situations
  • discussing basic vehicle checks
  • keeping records of appointments and payments
  • managing your business
